Charlie Chan is celebrated for her
compositions spanning jazz, classical, ambient and contemporary
forms. She has written numerous soundtracks for film, theatre,
dance and television including award winning scores for Australian
Story (ABC) McCleods Daughters (Nine Network) the hugely successful
play, Gift of the Gorgon for Sydney Theatre Company; and television
documentaries that have screened through National Geographic
and Discovery channels as well as national networks both in
Australia and abroad.
Charlie composed the score for the feature film Me Myself
I. This film was produced by the French production company
Gaumont (credits include Diva, The Big Blue, The Fifth Element,
The Professional and Joan of Arc). Me Myself I was written
and directed by Oscar nominee Pip Karmel and stars Rachel
Griffiths.
Charlie has won broad critical acclaim for her three solo
albums. The first, the Adventures of Charlie Chan , is a series
of technology-driven soundscapes while the second, East &
West , is a collection of improvised solo piano pieces. Her
current album Wild Swans is a logical progression from the
first that also takes flavours from the second; it is as dazzling
and contemporary.
With 20 years in the music industry Charlie has gained experience
in the creative, technical, marketing and administrative arenas.
In 1998 Charlie established Martian Music, an Internet based
sales and distribution mechanism to reach her international
and local audience.
She has pioneered Digital Downloads and Music eCommerce,
a new way of listening to and purchasing music, with the launch
of the web site, www.charliechan.com.au. The website attracts
enormous traffic of and has sold more than 55,000 CD’s.
