Cetus, the sea monster of Greek myth, often drawn as a whale, is the fourth-largest constellation in the sky, with 14 main stars. Its most famous star is Mira, 'the wonderful', the first variable star ever discovered, which brightens and fades over about 332 days. The tracks include Menkar, a red giant about 220 light years away, and Diphda, the brightest star in the whale.
Notes from Charlie: Menkar is a fitting opening: strong, harmonic, lyrical and joyous. If I were a whale, I think I might sound a bit like this.
Every piece in Constellation is a solo piano improvisation. Most came in the middle of scoring a film or working on some other curious project, when I needed to stop, breathe, and let my hands go wandering across the keys. Recorded across more than 25 years, they were released as 52 collections, one a week through 2023, each following the night sky. Every track is named for a star. 433 improvisations, around 30 hours of music.
Creativity is infinite.
