A collection of solo piano improvisations.
Orion, the hunter of Greek myth, rides high in Australian summer evenings from January to April. Its brightest star, Rigel, is a supergiant nearing the end of its life. The tracks are named for its stars, from Betelgeuse and Bellatrix to the three belt stars Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka, and M42, the Orion Nebula.
Notes from Charlie: Improvisations gathered from across my whole career, recorded at different times and in different places. Hearing them again after all these years, some of them genuinely surprised me.
Every piece in Constellation is an improvisation. Most came in the middle of scoring a film or working on something else, when I needed to stop and stretch out at the piano. Recorded across more than 25 years, they were released as 52 collections, one a week through 2023, each following the night sky. Every track is named for a star. 433 improvisations, around 30 hours of music. Creativity is infinite.
